Abstract
Il est généralement admis que la première rencontre entre l'Occident et les éléphants de guerre se produisit à Gaugamèles. Or, que l'armée d'Alexandre ait réellement affronté ces animaux au cours de la bataille reste fort douteux, car la Vulgate ne confirme pas le récit d'Arrien, selon lequel quinze éléphants des Indes figuraient sur la ligne de front de Darius. Nous proposons d'abord une revue critique de la recherche à ce sujet et soutenons qu'en général le récit de l'Anabase d'Arrien reste exact. Néanmoins, nous avançons que l'utilisation offensive de ces animaux contre les troupes d'Alexandre est invraisemblable. En effet, les généraux perses n'avaient que très peu d'expérience de cette arme de guerre qu'était l'éléphant.
