Interrogeant le principe d'une " poétique du recueil ", l'article considère, parmi trois cas de figure, le cas où le recueil apporte une qualité littéraire (poétique) à des textes qui n'en auraient pas nécessairement au préalable. Après l'esquisse d'une typologie des différentes formes de recueil, les recueils d'essais de Robert Musil (Nachlass zu Lebzeiten, 1936) et de Paul Valéry (Variété, 1924) sont analysés. L'étude des paratextes est rapportée à la structure des œuvres, montrant que leur projet poétique est fondé sur l'élaboration du recueil : aménagement d'une progression signifiante, mais aussi rappel de la démarche éditoriale elle-même. Ils offrent ainsi l'exemple d'œuvres polytextuelles pour lesquelles la mise en recueil a été non seulement le moyen, mais le geste d'une stratégie d'intégration au champ littéraire.
