Abstract
Cet article étudie la figure de l’héritier chez Victor-Lévy Beaulieu à partir d’une analyse des deux essais « monumentaux » qu’il consacre à Melville et à Joyce. L’héritier ne se définit pas ici comme un disciple ou même un successeur de ses modèles, mais se projette entièrement dans leur oeuvre et dans leur vie au point de les dévorer et de les faire siennes. Au-delà d’un rapport strictement métatextuel ou intertextuel, VLB s’empare de ces oeuvres pour transformer la littérature en une expérience totale par laquelle se superposent le désir impossible de la grande oeuvre, la hantise de la famille (avec le thème central de l’inceste) et l’échec de la nation.
