Des changements importants ont eu lieu dès l’époque moderne dans le domaine de l’histoire, soit en termes d’objet, soit en termes de méthode, soit encore dans les enjeux de la référence au passé. Si la Révolution a momentanément entravé les études historiques en bouleversant l’érudition, elle a suscité aussi un intérêt nouveau pour l’histoire, étroitement articulée sur l’expérience politique, et posé les bases du magistère historique de la génération suivante. Les ambitions de l’histoire en révolution ont été grandioses : ses cadres se sont élargis, ses concepts et ses branches se sont multipliés, elle a été chargée de nouvelles fonctions sociales. Ses réalisations ont fait plus de place aux traditions de pensée et d’écriture, à la continuité des hommes et des écoles.
