Abstract
Fidèle au principe d’organisation de Caillois lui-même dans Cases d’un échiquier, cet article propose une lecture « transversale » ou diagonale de Caillois « à travers » Jean Paulhan. Le point de départ est un petit texte de Paulhan sur une pierre, « La Pierre philosophale », analysé à la lumière des quelques pages consacrées par Caillois aux pierres et à sa théorie du « fantastique naturel » dans Cases d’un échiquier. Si, dès le départ, leur critique du surréalisme avait rapproché les deux écrivains (bien qu’aux extrêmes opposés d’une polarité), nul doute que le point de contact le plus manifeste entre Paulhan et Caillois à cette époque se trouvait dans leur interprétation respective de la notion de sacré. Il est cependant moins évident peut-être que ce soient les pierres qui offrent souvent le lieu de cette rencontre.
