Abstract
Comme l’affirme Martin Jay, les Lumières sont sans doute généralement « ocularocentristes » : la vue y est privilégiée et la vision est conçue comme le modèle de toute perception et de la connaissance en général. Diderot peut sembler participer à ce mouvement, par son intérêt marqué pour les arts visuels ou encore par l’importance qu’il accorde à la pantomime et au tableau au théâtre. Mais en fait, le philosophe n’a cessé de faire la critique de l’hégémonie de la vue pour penser l’expérience selon un autre modèle, un modèle tactile, qui suppose un contact physique entre le sujet et l’objet. Dans son Salon de 1763, puis dans Le rêve de d’Alembert, Diderot choisit une sculpture pour illustrer sa conception du rapport esthétique. Le Pygmalion et Galatée de Falconet est chaque fois l’occasion pour lui d’affirmer la continuité du sujet et du monde, du marbre et de la chair.
