El 4 de abril de 1082, reinando Alfonso VI el Valiente, nacía en Madrid el hombre que varios siglos más tarde sería beatificado y, posteriormente, canonizado como San Isidro Labrador. Hombre sencillo y bienhechor de los pobres empezó a ser venerado por el pueblo de Madrid unos cuarenta años después de su fallecimiento, hacia 1212, al atribuírsele distintas curaciones, apariciones y milagros. No sólo el pueblo madrileño abanderará la devoción a Isidro, sino que la monarquía se incorporará rápidamente a su veneración. En 1213 el rey Alfonso VIII, como agradecimiento al Santo por su intervención en la victoria de las Navas de Tolosa levantará una capilla en su honor en la iglesia de San Andrés y colocará su cuerpo incorrupto en la llamada arca «mosaica». Esta primera arca en la que reposó el cuerpo del Santo y que aún hoy se conserva, está constituida, interiormente, por tablones de madera de pino…
