Depuis les années 1990, de nouvelles formes de jardins sont apparues dans les villes françaises. Témoignant d’un renouveau dans l’art paysager, elles s’érigent désormais en modèle d’aménagement. La physionomie des parcs et des jardins publics, inscrits dans ces projets de territoire novateurs, offrent une physionomie revisitée. Ici ou là, une végétation spontanée affiche des airs indisciplinés en lieu et place d’espaces précédemment dûment entretenus. Au nom du génie écologique qui imprègne à présent la gestion de ces espaces d’artefact de nature dans la ville, une révision des pratiques jardinières s’impose. En Bretagne, à l’aube du XXIe siècle, l’histoire de l’eau et la volonté régionale de reconquérir sa qualité sont à l’origine de l’impulsion donnée aux collectivités locales de réorienter leurs pratiques. Cela supposa la révision des filtres interprétatifs de la nature en ville. Les jardiniers de collectivités locales dont le métier est d’entretenir les espaces végétalisés urbains livrent leur perception des évolutions en cours. Leurs récits de vie témoignent de la difficulté à renoncer à une esthétique ornementale au nom des nouvelles valeurs écologiques.
