Abstract
Paris experienced a remarkable surge in crimes by men claiming to be police — faux policiers — during the German occupation. This article describes faux policier methods and identifies the particular circumstances in which they thrived. Economic penury provided the context, but the structure of policing power, the weakness of the Vichy state, and the breakdown of distinctions between legal and illegal behaviour all encouraged the increase in faux policier crime.
