Abstract
Les planches du Codex Xolotl constituent une référence majeure pour l’histoire préhispanique du Mexique central. On y trouve l’espace mis en glyphes au moyen de conventions pictographiques, mais aussi la représentation d’un espace suprarégional pouvant correspondre, éventuellement, à l’empire chichimèque. Les scribes indiens utilisent la distorsion de l’espace pour écrire l’histoire : l’espace peut être surdimensionné, rapproché ou dupliqué. Cet espace est mis en mots avec les gloses alphabétiques et les premiers chroniqueurs indiens ou métis. Alva Ixtlilxochitl se l’appropriera à sa façon. On y relève à la fois une précision géographique stupéfiante et une possible censure de certains espaces sacrés.
