Abstract
L’essai photographique, une forme de narration visuelle reposant sur la succession de plusieurs images étroitement liées par un contexte graphique et textuel, constitue la principale nouveauté introduite par le photojournalisme dans les années 1930. Émancipée de sa stricte fonction illustrative, la photographie devient alors pleinement constitutive du récit historique. Dans la littérature spécialisée de l’époque, cette autonomie est décrite comme un affranchissement de l’image vis-à-vis du texte en même temps qu’une reconnaissance du statut professionnel du photojournaliste. Cet article propose d’examiner les modalités au moyen desquelles l’image photographique se constitue en écriture journalistique, cela en posant l’hypothèse que le photojournalisme, indissociable de la montée en puissance du paradigme de la communication dans les années 1940 principalement, reconfigure les rapports d’autorité que le texte entretient avec l’image.
