Résumé Au début, le leadership est neutre et l’argent aussi. Comme le premier dépend de l’autre, c’est la manière dont le leader compose avec l’argent qui corrompt ou bonifie l’un et l’autre. Le phénomène se manifeste surtout dans trois domaines où l’argent est le nerf du leadership : le placement, la gestion et la politique. L’alternative y est claire : on peut choisir soit l’émotion, soit la raison. C’est là que la neutralité cesse. Selon qu’il gère ses avoirs froidement ou qu’il laisse les émotions l’emporter dans ses décisions de placement, l’investisseur atteindra ou non ses objectifs à long terme. Pour les dirigeants d’entreprise, la menace la plus dévastatrice pour eux, pour les employés et pour les actionnaires est l’appât du gain à court terme, qui les empêche de remplir leur mandat de gestionnaires responsables et de remplir leur vie à hauteur d’homme. Ainsi, le leadership solide et durable se déploie loin de la tentation, dans l’univers de la raison, parce que l’argent en est le fondement ou l’instrument. Comme le système nerveux du corps humain, l’argent est indispensable à la vie et au bien-être de tout l’organisme. Il assure la libre circulation des biens, les échanges entre pays, entre commerçants et clients, entre gouvernements et contribuables. Il est l’instrument d’échange le plus efficace et le plus juste. On ne peut donc pas s’en priver.
