Je me propose ici de démontrer le fonctionnement communicationnel des Mardis de la dernière période en les mettant en parallèle avec deux autres dispositifs symboliques mallarméens : d’abord, le projet irréalisé et inlassablement évoqué du « Livre » ; ensuite, les poèmes réputés obscurs. Il s’agira par là de reconnaître comment les Mardis procèdent d’une stratégie générale de « retrait à caractère participatif » destinée à produire des bénéfices d’ordre doublement institutionnel et existentiel au poète et à ses disciples ; et comment, par cette stratégie qui semble avoir présidé à son investissement global dans le jeu littéraire, le poète donne à penser un mode de communication moderne agissant paradoxalement sous le motif ancien d’un certain secret à caractère initiatique.
