L’analyse de l’évolution diachronique des zones humides permet de saisir la mesure de l’interface entre les processus sociaux et les processus naturels qui caractérisent les interactions entre l’eau et la société. Autrement dit, elle renvoie à la question du rapport de l’homme à son territoire, c’est-à-dire à la façon dont il le gouverne. En effet, pendant longtemps, la gestion des zones humides en région Nord-Pas-de-Calais n’était pas appréhendée pour elle-même, mais au travers soit du risque d’inondation, soit des pratiques agraires. Leur disparition a amené progressivement les scientifiques et les gestionnaires du territoire à s’interroger sur leur passé, mais également sur leur identité ou leur mémoire, afin de prendre en compte leurs implications spatiales potentielles. L’émergence du développement durable n’y est pas non plus totalement étranger.
