Abstract
Résumé Entre 1837 et 1860, sept romans d'inspiration gothique paraissent au Canada français. Le caractère terrorisant de ces romans est cependant euphémisé. Cet article veut évoquer les entours idéologiques de cette production et tenter de décrire le contexte socio-historique qui a favorisé cet affadissement et qui a finalement provoqué l'essoufflement du genre. On sait que cette période est fertile en luttes fratricides entre libéraux et ultramontains, qui dans l'ensemble tournent à la faveur des clercs, luttes qui ont des incidences jusque sur le développement des genres et discours littéraires. La rhétorique cléricale, qui défend la foi et les moeurs, dénonce l'immoralité du roman et impose le barème de la morale dans la production et la diffusion des oeuvres littéraires. Le roman gothique est emporté par ce courant, et avec lui - et pour un siècle -, les valeurs esthétiques qui lui correspondent.
