Abstract
Over 20 years ago I had an experience that radically changed my view on midwifery and maternity. Together with three other midwives and a group of supportive obstetricians, we set up the first pilot project of midwifery in Canada. (Until very recently the only place that midwives could practise within the health service in Canada was in very remote areas where there were few or no doctors. Only doctors could be licensed to practise ‘midwifery’). As we had no precedents for our practice, quite naturally we set up what we thought would be best. We worked to provide continuity of carer to women and their families. We got to know women and their families and formed strong working relationships with them.
