Abstract
Dès son premier opus, Cahier d’un retour au pays natal (1939), Aimé Césaire rend hommage à Haïti, et il est reconnu que son oeuvre puise largement dans l’histoire de ce pays qui lui a inspiré deux ouvrages : La tragédie du roi Christophe (1961-1963) et Toussaint Louverture : la Révolution française et le problème colonial (1961). Cet article se propose de mettre en lumière ce qui est ignoré ou refoulé chez Césaire, soit sa dette envers les littératures haïtiennes tant orales qu’écrites, notamment ses emprunts aux essayistes Jean-Louis Vastey et Anténor Firmin, à l’historien Beaubrun Ardouin, au poète indigéniste Carl Brouard et à la tradition vaudou. De plus, au-delà de ces textes et à l’encontre de la doxa , l’auteur montrera que le corpus césairien s’inscrit dans un vaste réseau intertextuel caribéen remontant au xix e siècle.
