Abstract
Cet article vise à donner une interprétation libérale de l’opération américaine « Liberté en Irak », à partir d’une combinaison de la théorie libérale générale de la politique internationale proposée par Moravcsik et de la notion d’impérialisme telle qu’entendue par Hobson, Schumpeter et Snyder. Après avoir situé la problématique au sein des débats qui opposent réalistes et libéraux au sujet des causes fondamentales des guerres, l’article résume d’abord l’approche libérale générale avant d’approfondir la variante libérale de la thèse de l’impérialisme. La troisième partie défend la thèse que la décision des États-Unis d’entrer en guerre relève d’un programme politique lié aux intérêts et aux ambitions des dirigeants américains et de groupes de pressions à la fois économiques et idéologiques, et qu’elle a été facilitée par la démission des contre-pouvoirs aussi bien institutionnels que médiatiques.
