Nous avons resolu la structure cristalline de la kirkiite avec donnees obtenues sur monocristal avec un rayonnement MoKa et un detecteur a aire de type CCD, jusqu'a un residu R 1 de 0.069. Elle cristallise dans le groupe spatial P2 1 /m, avec a 8.621(4), b 26.03(1), c 8.810(4) A, β 119.21(1)° et Z= 2. L'ebauche de la structure et une analyse chimique menent a des formules comparables, Pb 10 Bi 2.16 As 3.84 S 19 et Pb 10.08 Bi 2.55 Sb 0.13 As 291 S 19 , respectivement, et comparables a la formule ideale, Pb 10 Bi 3 As 3 S 19 . Le reseau possede une symetrie pseudohexagonale, qui est la cause du developpement de macles dans ce mineral. La loi de macle principale possede (201) comme plan de macle, et [100] est l'axe de la macle, a cause de la distorsion orthorhombique de la maille pseudohexagonale, en accord avec l'alignement des micelles des paires d'electrons isoles en rangees paralleles a (001). Le mecanisme du maclage rend compte de la formation des lamelles de macle observees ayant (201) comme plan de contact. La structure de la kirkiite peut se decrire en termes de plaques (010) d'octaedres d'une epaisseur de trois octaedres de chaque cote d'un plan de reflexion situe dans le niveau prismatique intercale. Selon une autre interpretation, la structure est faite de plaques fondees sur l'archetype PbS-SnS transitionnel, avec des couches fortement rattachees paralleles a (083) de la kirkiite; ces plaques sont maclees sur une echelle de la maille elementaire avec (010) comme plan de reflexion. La structure contient une position As partagee, et deux sites additionnels qui peuvent accommoder a la fois As et Bi. La distribution de As et Bi sur ces deux sites depend de la distorsion trapezoidale du milieu de coordinence semi-octaedrique a l'interieur des couches doubles fortement rattachees des plaques de l'archetype PbS-SnS. Vues les exigeances de la stoechiometrie dans cette structure, le Bi doit aussi remplacer 1/11 des sites Pb. D'apres les calculs des valences de liaison et du volume des polyedres de coordinence, l'As serait incorpore a deux des sites Pb. La kirkiite et lajordanite Pb 28 As 12 S 46 definissent une paire d'homologues. La formule generale d'une series d'homologues potentielle serait Pb 8N-4 Me 3+ 12 S 8N+14 .
