Abstract
Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935) was a Russian painter, originator of the avant-garde movement called Suprematist. His artistic production was often characterized by human figures with asymmetrical shoulders (Panel A: “Girl in the Country,” with permission of The State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation). Patients with dystonia may present with a shoulder elevation strikingly resembling Malevich's representation of human figures. Here, we present an example of “Malevich's shoulder” in a 59-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease since the age of 46. DBS of STN produced a motor improvement (51% UPDRS-III reduction 1 year after surgery), but worsened a pre-existing left-shoulder dystonia affecting her movements and causing pain (Panel B). Turning off the stimulation for 30 (Panel C) and 60 minutes (Panel D) progressively improves left-shoulder posture and reduces pain severity from 6/10 to 2/10. (1) Research Project: A. Conception, B.
