Abstract
Abstract: Eugene Rogers's Sexuality and the Christian Body offers a theological argument in favour of the churches’ acceptance of same‐sex marriage. There are four strands to this: an attempt to align homosexuals with groups of people whose status as naturally morally deficient (gentiles, slaves, women) is challenged within scripture; a deployment of the ethical strategies of Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth to reach different conclusions to those they themselves reached; a theology of marriage that contains room for homosexual marriage; and a suggestion that at the least his arguments should be sufficient to demonstrate that this is not an issue that demands schism. This article argues that on each of these four points his arguments are deficient.
