Abstract
La notion de non-public conserve-t-elle encore de la pertinence dans le contexte des musées français des années 2000 ? La réponse se construit en trois temps. D’abord, on considère l’évolution du volume de la fréquentation, la configuration des pratiques de visite et les carrières des visiteurs. Ensuite, on discute les conséquences d’une gratuité permanente, régulière ou occasionnelle d’accès aux collections, en particulier celles relatives à l’expérimentation menée dans quatorze établissements au premier semestre 2008. Enfin, on montre que non seulement la gratuité suscite la mobilisation de publics dont le lien avec la culture et ses institutions est intermittent, mais qu’elle possède un effet de levier dans la fabrication de la familiarité muséale. Le tout réduit à quia les défenseurs de la thèse d’une inertie des attitudes et comportements à l’égard des musées.
