Que sait le poème ? Pour tenter de répondre à cette question, l'auteur part des " gloses " dont André Frénaud accompagna l'édification de la Sorcière de Rome. Le geste singulier du poète consiste ici à s'interroger sans relâche sur le comment du poème. Il découvre que naître à soi dans les signes, c'est se détacher du langage. La glose a dès lors pour fonction de fixer l'image du processus poétique. Les concepts qu'elle mobilise sont ici largement empruntés à la psychanalyse. Mais la psychanalyse, chez Frénaud, contribue sans doute surtout à conférer aux acteurs du poème des dimensions mythiques ou tragiques, qui dispensent de toute élucidation. La glose n'est donc qu'un modèle de lecture. Mais une lecture fascinée par son objet, par le " frémissement d'être " qu'il contient. Ainsi le poète découvre-t-il et nous enseigne-t-il que tout poème est en profondeur métapoème en ce qu'il s'affronte lui-même au mystère de son apparition et de son existence.
