Cet article vise à restituer les dynamiques de constitution d’un secteur du conseil en management français spécialisé dans la gestion des relations avec les syndicats. Celui-ci se structure à partir des années 1970, marquées par une forte conflictualité dans les entreprises, autour de praticiens des relations professionnelles, entretenant des liens étroits avec le monde académique des sciences sociales, et de militants reconvertis. À partir de l’examen de leurs trajectoires et de leurs pratiques, l’auteur montre l’intérêt de dépasser une approche du développement du management focalisée sur les seules préoccupations du monde patronal. Prendre en compte les formes de socialisation professionnelle et militante spécifiques de ces consultants permet tout d’abord de cerner leur inclination à s’emparer d’un enjeu – la « civilisation » des affrontements entre syndicats et patronat – selon des logiques et des intérêts qui leur sont propres. C’est également se donner les moyens de comprendre la manière dont ils tentent de convertir leurs savoirs et savoir-faire dans une compétence d’expertise managériale reconnue.
