Abstract
Résumé La Gazette littéraire, fondée par Fleury Mesplet et Valentin Jautard en 1778, ne dura qu'une année; au mois de juin 1779, l'emprisonnement dé l'imprimeur et du rédacteur interrompit leur oeuvre de diffusion des Lumières. Cependant, la critique reconnaît l'importance de ce journal, où se serait exprimée une vie intellectuelle intense sur des sujets aussi variés que la littérature, la critique, les beaux-arts, etc. Or, dans cet article, les auteurs démontrent que, plutôt que d'être le lieu d'expression de l'intelligence canadienne de l'époque, la Gazette littéraire est le produit, pour l'essentiel, de Mesplet et de Jautard eux-mêmes. Ceux-ci, sous le couvert de nombreux pseudonymes, manipulent un dialogue qui permet d'orienter à leur gré le contenu du journal. En dévoilant ce subterfuge, l'étude conclut que la Gazette littéraire, du point de vue de son enunciation, ressortit à la fiction, et qu'elle doit être considérée sous ce nouvel éclairage dans l'histoire du Québec.
