Cet article traite des mérites et des limites respectives de trois approches (interprétative, expérientielle et explicative) des demandes d’intercession dans les religions et rituels de guérison. Une première partie présente les façons dont les Autochtones d’Amérique se sont appropriés le catholicisme, appropriation dans laquelle s’est construite la figure de Kateri Tekakwitha comme celle qui guérit ses dévots. Une deuxième partie présente la manière dont des anthropologues nord-américains, hommes et femmes, qui sont partisans d’une approche expérientielle dans l’étude des rituels de guérison, sont initiés dans des traditions chamaniques et deviennent eux-mêmes des guérisseurs. Une dernière partie explique que c’est en raison de l’indifférence cosmique à leur condition existentielle que les humains créent des traditions religieuses et des rituels de guérison pour mieux affronter l’incertitude, la souffrance et la mort. Tout au long de l’article, ces trois approches sont discutées à la lumière des concepts de dispositif (Foucault et Deleuze) et de dissonance cognitive (Fetsinger).
