Depuis son décès en 1967, la grande majorité des historiens québécois ont marginalisé Lionel Groulx, soulignant son rôle comme figure nationaliste mais minimisant celui qu'il a joué dans le développement de la profession historique au Québec. En sa qualité de fondateur de l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française et de la Revue d'histoire de l'Amérique française, Groulx a été perçu comme un propagandiste peu intéressé à encourager la recherche scientifique au Québec. Néanmoins, le rôle de Groulx dans les affaires de l'Institut et de la RHAF est beaucoup plus complexe qu'on ne l'a écrit. En me basant sur des documents tirés des archives de l'Institut et qui n'avaient pas encore été consultés, je me propose de présenter Groulx comme un historien désireux de faire oeuvre scientifique, tout en mettant de l'avant un certain nombre de points de vue. Comme président de l'Institut et directeur de la Revue, Groulx reflète bien les tensions entre les aspirations des historiens à expliquer objectivement le passé et leur tendance à promouvoir des représentations marquées par la société dans laquelle ils baignent.
