Abstract
The effect of a uremic environment on phosphate excretion by a decreased nephron population was studied in dogs with either subtotal renal infarction or extensive radiation nephritis. No significant difference was observed between the two groups. In the uremic environment phosphate reabsorption decreased despite an increase in the filtered load of phosphate. It is concluded that both damaged and intact nephrons respond comparably to changes in phosphate load and that parathyroid activity plays an important regulatory role in decreasing phosphate reabsorption in the uremic state.
