> Le plan d’organisation du corps des vertebres est metamerique dans le sens antero-posterieur. Les structures periodiques dans l’espace, dont les somites, precurseurs des vertebres elles-memes, se forment dans la continuite de la gastrulation lors de l’elongation de l’axe antero-posterieur. La regularite et la flexibilite de ce processus ont amene Cooke et Zeeman en 1976 a postuler l’existence d’une horloge de segmentation moleculaire, rythmant la formation des somites au cours du developpement, et d’un front d’interaction se deplacant vers le pole posterieur [1]. Le role de ce front dynamique serait d’interagir avec l’oscillation de segmentation temporelle afin de former les motifs periodiques spatiaux. Il a fallu attendre 1997 pour que cette hypothese theorique soit confirmee en partie, avec la mise en evidence, dans le mesoderme presomitique, d’oscillations de la concentration du produit du gene c-hairy chez le poulet [2]. De nombreux travaux ont depuis confirme l’existence d’oscillations d’expressions genetiques lors de ce processus, et ce dans au moins trois voies de signalisation (Notch, FGF, Wnt) ; des developpements technologiques tres recents permettent de les visualiser en temps reel [3-5] (➜). Cependant, la dynamique des oscillations elles-memes, ainsi que celle de l’hypothetique front de differenciation restent mal comprises.
