> Le plan d'organisation du corps des vertébrés est métamérique dans le sens antéro-postérieur.Les structures périodiques dans l'espace, dont les somites, précurseurs des vertèbres elles-mêmes, se forment dans la continuité de la gastrulation lors de l'élongation de l'axe antéro-postérieur.La régularité et la flexibilité de ce processus ont amené Cooke et Zeeman en 1976 à postuler l'existence d'une horloge de segmentation moléculaire, rythmant la formation des somites au cours du développement, et d'un front d'interaction se déplaçant vers le pôle postérieur [1].Le rôle de ce front dynamique serait d'interagir avec l'oscillation de segmentation temporelle afin de former les motifs périodiques spatiaux.Il a fallu attendre 1997 pour que cette hypothèse théorique soit confirmée en partie, avec la mise en évidence, dans le mésoderme présomitique, d'oscillations de la concentration du produit du gène c-hairy chez le poulet [2].De nombreux travaux ont depuis confirmé l'existence d'oscillations d'expressions génétiques lors de ce processus, et ce dans au moins trois voies de signalisation (Notch, FGF, Wnt) ; des développements technologiques très récents permettent de les visualiser en temps réel [3-5] (➜).Cependant, la dynamique des oscillations elles-mêmes, ainsi que celle de l'hypothétique front de différenciation restent mal comprises.
