Abstract
À la fin des études secondaires, une majorité des meilleurs élèves optent en France pour une voie spécifique qui les éloigne de l’université de masse : les classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles. Ces classes post-baccalauréat, installées pour la plupart dans les lycées publics, permettent en deux ans d’accéder par concours aux grandes écoles qui ouvrent sur les emplois les plus prestigieux et les plus rémunérateurs. Cette filière d’excellence n’a été remise en question que récemment : on lui reproche aujourd’hui son recrutement peu démocratique. Cette spécificité française interroge évidemment l’idéal de justice que le service public d’éducation prétend défendre. La contribution explicite le recrutement et le fonctionnement des classes préparatoires, pointe leurs dysfonctionnements et analyse les tentatives de transformation émanant des personnels des établissements comme des responsables du système. On propose ici de mettre ces tentatives au compte soit d’une logique civique rapprochée soit d’un mouvement de reconsidération de l’éthique d’État.
