Abstract

On a traditionnellement interprété comme un éloge le dessein de Critias de commémorer Athènes dans l'élégie sur l'étiologie (DK 88 B 2). Cependant, une réévaluation de cette élégie suggère au contraire que son but était à la fois parodique et dogmatique, offrant à ses compatriotes qui formaient l'élite de sauver le débat aristocratique des influences corruptrices de la démocratie et de l'empire en même temps que la démocratisation de l'institution elle-même. Une telle lecture correspond aux idées politiques de Critias ainsi qu'à sa critique des débats athéniens contemporains présentée ailleurs dans son œuvre.
