Abstract
On associe traditionnellement, tout en les opposant, Bonheur d'occasion et Le Survenant, parus tous deux en 1945 : le roman de Gabrielle Roy inaugurerait, dans l'histoire de la littérature québécoise, la longue série des romans consacrés au monde urbain, tandis que celui de Germaine Guèvremont représenterait l'apogée et le déclin du roman de la terre. En dépit des apparences, ces deux oeuvres sont fortement empreintes d'un mélange de tradition et de modernité et traduisent en fait le passage d'une société fermée, canadienne-française, à une société ouverte, nord-américaine. Dans cette perspective, les personnages de Jean Lévesque et du Survenant jouent le rôle de médiateurs et traduisent deux attitudes paradigmatiqués devant le continent : prométhéenne pour le premier personnage, dionysienne pour le second.
