La maladie du deperissement chronique (MDC) des cervides, propre a trois especes de cervides des Etats-Unis et du Canada (wapiti, cerf de Virginie, cerf mulet), est l’une des plus anciennes maladies a prion ou encephalopathie spongiforme transmissible (EST) connues et la seule existant naturellement sur des especes sauvages. L’interet accru qui lui est porte est relativement recent et il est sans aucun doute lie a la defiance qu’a generee la crise de la vache folle en Europe vis-a-vis des EST. Cette synthese passe en revue les connaissances actuelles sur la maladie, en cherchant a mettre en avant ses caracteristiques propres ainsi que les developpements associes possibles. Bien qu’anciennement connue, cette maladie reste une des EST les moins bien comprises. Il s’agit bien d’une entite differente des autres EST. Les difficultes rencontrees sont en partie liees au fait qu’elle touche des especes sauvages, par definition plus difficiles a etudier. Les implications epidemiologiques et sanitaires seront evoquees.
