À partir des œuvres thématiquement et chronologiquement rapprochées que sont Du côté de chez Swann et Mort à crédit, le présent article tente de conjuguer la dimension autobiographique de l’écriture de l’enfance avec la découverte du monde moderne, que le roman orchestre alors même qu’il la met en crise. Le point de départ et le fil rouge de cette réflexion sont à trouver dans les théories littéraires de l’archéologie philosophique de Foucault, pour qui la littérature représente une redistribution des signes de la société ainsi qu’une marge dans laquelle l’ordre de l’histoire vient s’échouer et se redistribuer. Chez Proust comme chez Céline, la naïveté propre à l’enfance est réinvestie d’une primitivité critique qui permet une reprise réflexive de l’existence et de l’écriture.
