Abstract This article assesses and quantifies the impact of higher harmonic terminations on the current and voltage waveforms of microwave devices.Previous works have shown that it is very difficult to obtain “ideal” textbook waveforms, due to the effect of higher harmonic terminations. The emergence of waveform measurement systems has made it possible to investigate the shapes of current and voltage waveforms for design purposes. This article further expands on this issue and quantifies the impact of the uncontrolled higher harmonics on the waveforms. The impact is first explained using theory and then demonstrated with simulation and actual large‐signal measurements. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
