Abstract
La colonisation française au xviie siècle a été particulièrement importante aux Iles d’Amérique et au Canada. Pour la contextualiser correctement, il faut la mettre en relation avec les efforts fournis par la royauté pour développer le commerce international maritime, commerce et colonisation ne prenant leur sens que par rapport au mercantilisme, doctrine d’État politico-économique, elle-même indissociable des rivalités entre les grands États européens. L’article s’appuie principalement sur les écrits de deux acteurs politiques majeurs, Richelieu et Colbert qui ont conçu et mis en place cette politique. Il conclut par un retour sur la richesse relative des données sur le peuplement, alors que la population du royaume ne suscite pas la même attention.
