Abstract
Cet article traite des représentations de l’intimité masculine dans la sociologie contemporaine, partant des thèses fonctionnalistes du déficit jusqu’aux travaux produits par les chercheurs de l’école des Études masculines et des enjeux que cela suppose pour les hommes. Deux thèses s’affrontent. D’une part, l’intérêt pour l’intimité masculine a émergé en même temps que la période de dévaluation de la reconnaissance sociale des capitaux et attributs fondateurs de la masculinité hégémonique, le modèle fonctionnaliste sexiste prônant le sujet féminin et ses attributs comme la norme comportementale dans le domaine de l’intime au sein duquel l’intimité masculine était posée comme déficitaire. D’autre part, l’idée plus récente d’étudier l’intime du point de vue des hommes plutôt que d’essayer de leur appliquer un modèle de comportement féminin pour évaluer leur degré d’intimité constitue une critique virulente de la société patriarcale. Mais avec la conscience de la manière dont le monde de l’intime existe pour Soi, l’individu est alors confronté à un travail de réflexion radical le menant à considérer une intimité autre, une remise en question du modèle masculin basé sur la compétition, la hiérarchie le sexisme et l’homophobie.
