Abstract
This chapter discusses the clinical signs, immunologic mechanisms and etiologic associations, diagnostics, treatments and prevention, and prognosis and clinical outcomes of inflammatory airway disease (IAD) in horses. It also describes the types of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid inflammation and cytokine profile, and explains the links between IAD and heaves, and the links between IAD and exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). IAD is a common condition of horses characterized by airway inflammation, alterations in pulmonary function, and the presence of one or more clinical signs of respiratory disease. Current treatment recommendations are directed at decreasing exposure to environmental dust particles (irritant and potential allergens), in conjunction with steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and bronchodilators. It is likely that horses that eventually develop heaves are initially diagnosed as having IAD and, although clinical signs can be controlled in most cases, there is no curative treatment.
