L’humour constitue une dimension présente à des degrés divers dans plusieurs genres de la littérature orale nahuat. En écoutant des récits mythiques et ethnohistoriques et des contes moraux, l’auditoire se moque des monstres et des ennemis vaincus par le héros civilisateur Sentiopil, par les vaillants ancêtres ou par l’opossum astucieux des histoires d’animaux. Par ailleurs les métaphores audacieuses par lesquelles on désigne la bien-aimée et les rapports sexuels dans les poèmes d’amour sont en accord avec l’atmosphère joyeuse qui règne dans les noces, où on les chante pendant la danse duxochipitsaua. Quant aux contes pour passer le temps (sanilmej) et aux histoires de sexe (pitsotajtolmej), ils ont pour fonction première de provoquer le rire en déformant la réalité. On peut aussi déceler dans ces derniers une intention latente de subvertir la hiérarchie sociale existante : les Amérindiens pauvres l’emportent sur les grands propriétaires et les riches étrangers, et les femmes font tourner en bourrique les hommes qui veulent en abuser et, parfois, le diable lui-même !
