Abstract
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Ground Icing Research Program responds primarily to research requirements established by the FAA Flight Standards Service and works closely with Transport Canada and the Society of Automotive Engineers G-12 Aircraft Ground Deicing Committee. Its research includes development of methods and procedures for endurance time testing of freezing point depressant fluids, timely investigation of newly arising operational issues, and investment in promising new technologies. This paper covers selected topics from recent and current research, including development of a snow generation system, investigation of issues relating to operation in ice pellet conditions, development of a new formulation reference fluid for aerodynamic acceptance testing, use of forced air deicing systems in the application of anti-icing fluids, and evaluation of remote on-ground ice detection systems.
