Abstract
A une époque où on reparle beaucoup de l’entrepreneur et de l’esprit d'entreprise, l’auteur s’interroge sur l’origine, déjà ancienne, du concept. L’article tente de repérer, dans l’histoire de la pensée économique, les étapes importantes dans sa construction. Quatre séquences sont ainsi étudiées. Au début du XVIII* siècle, CANTILLON insiste sur le risque que doit assumer l’entrepreneur dans la production. Avec les premiers développements de la révolution industrielle, SAY propose une définition de l'entrepreneur considéré en tant que catalyseur de l’économie. Par souci de formalisation du processus économique, WALRAS - tout en accordant à l’entrepreneur une place de choix et bien distincte des autres acteurs - tend à vider le concept de son contenu. Il faudra alors attendre la première moitié du XX* siècle pour que KNIGHT et SCHUMPETER analysent l'entrepreneur de façon moins mécanique et plus dynamique.
