The following essay was originally published in The Chronicle of Higher Education on14 May 2004. The essay examines the motivation, and the self-doubt, that propels much academic writing. Drawing upon personal experience (and with a nod to The Wizard of Oz), author Thomas Hallock maintains that many scholars write in order to overcome their own insecurities.
