Les dix dernières années ont vu la fermeture ou la refonte de nombreux programmes et départements de français soumis à des remises en cause qui ont créé un climat de crise pour les études françaises dans le contexte déjà aléatoire des disciplines qui relèvent des “Humanités” dans l’enseignement supérieur américain en ce début du 21ème siècle. Cet article examine la situation du français en tant que langue enseignée dans les universités américaines puis en tant que domaine d’étude qui a dû évoluer ces dernières années avec l’émergence dans un premier temps des études francophones d’abord perçues comme rivales des études franco-françaises traditionnelles. Aujourd’hui l'influence des études globales qui ouvrent la porte aux études culturelles nationales faites en traduction et à des approches globalisantes des littératures-monde nécessite une réorientation des études francopolyphones ou francosphériques afin que celles-ci puissent s’imposer en tant que domaine à part entière des études globales.
