Abstract
La notion de communauté a changé de sens et de statut au fil de l’évolution des régimes démocratiques et du capitalisme. Si la plupart des fondateurs de la démocratie considérèrent cette notion négativement, elle fut associée à celle de nation et devint un adjuvant de la consolidation des États à la faveur de l’affirmation des puissances économiques du XIXe siècle. Puis, l’idée de communauté, notamment nationale, fut reniée à la suite des trois guerres européennes pour être réactivée comme communauté de sort particulier et base de contestations égalitaires de groupes minoritaires à partir des années 1950-1960. Enfin, la restructuration des États-providence, des échanges et de la production (sous l’effet d’une vague d’expansion du capitalisme depuis les années 1980) assigne une nouvelle définition à la notion de communauté, celle de lieu essentiel où s’ancrent les liens entre des citoyens.
