Une réflexion sur la valeur des choses est envisagée à partir de l’oeuvre de Northrop Frye pour qui la mythologie, qui est la matrice du sens, structure à la fois le temps et l’espace. Or il est soutenu que cette structuration de l’espace et du temps n’est pas le simple fait de la mythologie elle-même, mais aussi d’une condition géographique. Cette hypothèse offre l’occasion d’un retour à la théorie économique qui, en distinguant valeur d’usage et valeur d’échange, suggère que l’avènement et la communication de la valeur des biens reposent sur la distanciation spatio-temporelle qui se crée entre ces biens et les sujets appelés à en saisir le sens avant de se les approprier ou de s’en détacher. Pour comprendre la nature et la pleine portée de cette distanciation, il faut toutefois sortir du champ de la théorie économique. Pour ce faire, il est suggéré qu’un interdit de propriété soit à la base de cette distanciation. Même esquissée sommairement, cette idée permet la formulation de quelques propositions sur les rapports entre l’instance mythologique, le langage et la pensée rationnelle dans la société contemporaine.
