Abstract
As pediatric oncology (C.L.) and geriatrics/ palliative care (D.L.) physicians, we are confronted frequently with end-of-life situations. However, when we were involved in this situation as family members (daughter and sonin-law, respectively), the perspective appeared very different. We thought we were well prepared to face the situation and help our family member fulfill her wishes to stay home to the end of her life and preserve her independence. However, when she gradually deteriorated with the progression of her uterine sarcoma, we quickly felt overwhelmed and powerless. It made us realize, to a greater degree than before, what families have to go through. We learned of specific difficulties related to being both physicians and primary caregivers.
