Abstract
Abattu le jour des Morts 1979 par la brigade anti-gang du commissaire Broussard, le truand Jacques Mesrine a longtemps défrayé la chronique médiatique et fait aujourd’hui figure de mythe. L’une des raisons de cette postérité tient sans doute à la capacité que le gangster a eue de se placer au centre d’une intense production textuelle, dont le noyau est sa propre autobiographie, significativement intitulée L’instinct de mort (1974). La trajectoire de Mesrine, conçue par le protagoniste comme un choix transformant sa vie en destin dont la fin est d’emblée connue, et la constante mise en scène de soi qui l’accompagne, se soumettent intégralement à un récit collectif préexistant, vaste intertexte paralittéraire que Foucault appelait la « saga monotone des grands criminels ». Le but de cette contribution est de montrer que, dans la conjoncture singulière des années pompidoliennes et giscardiennes, le « roman-Mesrine » mobilise successivement deux figures antithétiques : celle du « hors-la-loi », présentée comme ultime avatar de l’aventurier romantique ; et celle de « l’ennemi public », qui permet de transformer la révolte individuelle en cause politique.
