Abstract
Durante las últimas décadas se ha venido observando en Argentina un aumento ininterrumpido de la proporción de uniones establecidas fuera del matrimonio, lo que ha generado interés por comprender las causas de este fenómeno y sus consecuencias sobre la organización familiar. Una de las pocas fuentes que permiten estudiar los efectos de los factores sociodemográficos y económicos sobre los comportamientos nupciales es la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares (EPH), que levanta periódicamente el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos. La EPH ofrece la ventaja de que, al ser una encuesta por paneles, permite no sólo analizar las características de la población en el momento de la encuesta, también seguir la trayectoria durante el tiempo que permanecen en la muestra (18 meses). En este trabajo se utilizan los datos de la EPH para estimar el efecto de un conjunto de características sociodemográficas y económicas sobre la probabilidad de vivir en unión consensual y sobre el riesgo de convertir la unión consensual en matrimonio durante el periodo 1995-2003, en los principales centros urbanos del país. AbstractIn recent decades, Argentina has seen a steady increase in the proportion of extra-marital unions, which has sparked interest in understanding the causes of this phenomenon and its consequences for family organization. One of the few sources allowing one to study the effects of socio-demographic and economic factors on marital behavior is the Permanent Household Survey (EPH), periodically undertaken by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses. The advantage of EPH is that since it is a panel survey, it not only allows one to analyze the characteristics of the population at the time of the survey but also to chart its development during the time it is included in the survey (18th months). This paper used EPH date to estimate the effect of a set of socio-demographic and economic characteristics on the likelihood of living in a consensual union and the probability of turning a consensual union into marriage during the period from 1995 to 2003 in the country’s main urban centers.
