Les classes moyennes et supérieures choisissent de plus en plus souvent de vivre dans des quartiers résidentiels fermés (gated communities, en anglais) non seulement aux États-Unis, mais aussi en Amérique latine et dans d’autres régions du monde. La prolifération de cette forme résidentielle n’est pas sans s’accompagner d’enjeux politiques et pourrait mener à une fragmentation accrue des villes, en privant les populations les plus vulnérables d’un accès à des ressources urbaines publiques (infrastructures et services collectifs). L’article propose une analyse géopolitique de cette forme résidentielle dans le contexte latino-américain où elle connaît présentement une forte diffusion. Après une description des principales caractéristiques des quartiers résidentiels fermés en contexte latino-américain, en s’appuyant sur une discussion des notions de ségrégation, de solidarité et de cohésion sociale, l’article montre en quoi les quartiers résidentiels fermés sont des formes résidentielles ségrégatives qui menacent de façon particulière la cohésion sociale dans des villes où les pauvres forment une forte proportion de la population.
