La ville actuelle est incompréhensible si on ne la replace pas dans son contexte: celui des antagonismes de classes du capitalisme. C'est là le cadre général de cet article, cadre à l'intérieur duquel plusieurs points précis sont examinés: la ville et l'industrie, la constitution du centre-ville, la mise sur pied des équipements, les quartiers populaires, les quartiers ethniques, et l'expansion de la ville aux dépens de la campagne.
